چکیده

W ITH the current explosive rate of progress in genetics, we are less likely than ever before to devote much thought to those whose research established the firm foundation on which our science has been built. In this essay, I pay tribute to a distinguished figure in the development of plant genetics, EDWARD M. EAST, and to two of his first graduate students, ROLLINS A. EMERSON and DONALD F. JONES. All three figured prominently in research that made maize a model system for plant genetics and transformed the methods used by plant breeders to improve the yield and agronomic qualities of the maize species. Each was from the Midwest-East from Illinois, EMERSON from Nebraska, and JONES from Kansas-so it is ironic that virtually all the research on a quintessentially Midwestern crop for which they are known was carried out in the Northeast. All were much honored by their contemporaries, including their election to the National Academy of Sciences, and each served as president of the Genetics Society of America. EDWARD EAST had been educated in another discipline, like all of the first generation of geneticists. EAST was trained as a chemist at the University of Illinois. He became interested in maize breeding in his position at Illinois as an assistant to C. G. HOPKINS, who was engaged in experiments to change the oil and protein content of maize through selection. This effort is continuing to the present time and is still making progress in the lines selected for higher contents. EAST’S task was to conduct the chemical analyses of the various samples, a task he apparently regarded as thoroughly routine. He was rescued by the offer of a position by the director of the Connecticut Agricultural Experimental Station in New Haven, E. H. JENKINS. JENKINS, also a chemist, had been impressed by the Illinois selection experiments. Desiring to initiate such research at Connecticut, he hired EAST on HOPKINS’S recommendation.

Genes, Gene Flow and Adaptation of Diabrotica virgifera virgifera

1 Diabrotica virgifera virgifera has emerged as a major pest of cultivated maize, due to a combination of its high capacity to inflict economic damage, adaptability to pest management techniques and invasiveness. 2 This review presents a survey of the current state of knowledge about the genetics of D. v. virgifera . In addition, the tools and resources currently available to Diabrotica genetic...

The maize genetics and genomics database. The community resource for access to diverse maize data.

The Maize Genetics and Genomics Database (MaizeGDB) serves the maize (Zea mays) research community by making a wealth of genetics and genomics data available through an intuitive Web-based interface. The goals of the MaizeGDB project are 3-fold: to provide a central repository for public maize information; to present the data through the MaizeGDB Web site in a way that recapitulates biological ...

Richard Bright and his neurological studies.

Richard Bright was one of the famous triumvirate of Guy's Hospital physicians in the Victorian era. Remembered for his account of glomerulonephritis (Bright's disease) he also made many important and original contributions to medicine and neurology. These included his work on cortical epileptogenesis, descriptions of simple partial (Jacksonian) seizures, infantile convulsions, and a variety of ...

Genetic analysis of yield, yield-components and related phenological traits of maize (Zea mays L.) to breed under moisture stress conditions

Improved drought-tolerant maize hybrids would significantly reduce water consumption and increase yield in arid environments. Our knowledge about genetic parameters is very essential before starting a successful breeding program. The present research was carried out throughout three successive years between 2013-15 to reveal the pattern of inheritance in yield, yield-components and related...

10 Reasons to be Tantalized by the B73 Maize Genome

Why should you read about the maize genome? Now that so many eukaryotic genomes are available, it’s easy to be blasé... just another few billion bases, grist for constructing gene trees. Why is this new information, so recently shared, worth considering? I am convinced, as I propose you will be too as you read on, that both geneticists and genome consumers will benefit from the first descriptio...
